Underwater Archaeology

The Underwater Archaeology ScotSAC diving endorsement has been introduced to promote an awareness of maritime heritage and underwater archaeology. It also aims to rewards those ScotSAC members who are prepared to learn new diving skills and widen their knowledge.

The endorsement is titled ‘Underwater Archaeology’ and to gain the endorsement the candidate has to complete the Nautical Archaeology Society’s (NAS) Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology one day course. Any qualified ScotSAC diver can gain this award and if you have already completed the NAS Introduction course, the endorsement can be gained retrospectively.

The one day course introduces divers to the basic principles of underwater archaeology, the relevant legislation, and teaches the practical skills required to enable a diver to carry out a basic two dimensional survey of an underwater site. NAS Introduction Courses are held in Edinburgh, Lochaline and at the Scottish Crannog Centre on Loch Tay.

Additionally this endorsement, along with NAS Part 1 Course, can be used towards completing the ScotSAC First Class Diver ‘Underwater Archaeology Module’.
