Have Your Say - What the committee said!

The Scottish Sub-Aqua Club is run by the General Committee (GC) and National Diving Council (NDC). All GC and NDC members are elected annually by the membership. Your feedback is vital in understanding the needs and feelings of the membership. If you have any comments, suggestions or constructive criticism relating to any aspect of the club, then please complete the Have Your Say form. Comments will be discussed by the General Committee or National Diving Council as appropriate.

Here are the answers to questions submitted so far.

VisitScotand Website

Question: The Visit Scotland website has a reference to SSAC which says the club provide PADI training, can anything be done to sort this out?

Answer: We have now contacted VisitScotland and asked for updated and correct information to be placed on the website. We hope this answers your query, but if you have any other enquiries or require further information, please contact hq@scotsac.com or via out website www.scotsac.com

Third Party Insurance

Question: Does the third party insurance cover me, if I am diving with a qualified member of another organisation like BSAC or PADI ?

Answer: The current SSAC third party liability insurance covers members diving within the rules and regulations of SSAC. This covers activities when diving with divers from other organisations, providing you are diving within the rules and regulations of SSAC. We would also advise that you ensure any other dive partners are suitably covered for their own third party liability insurance.

A copy of the Synopsis of insurance cover is available should you require it. Please contact SSAC HQ on hq@scotsac.com or 0141 425 1021.

Disclosure Checks

Question: I already have a disclosure check through my job, and have the certificate available. Do I still need to complete another disclosure for SSAC?

Answer: The SSAC has a developed a clear policy based on guidance received from authorities. This policy has been approved for use by CRBS, and entitles SSAC to free Disclosure checks. The full SSAC policies are available for download from www.scotsac.com/downloads.htm#policy

Disclosure checks are required for all new posts which for SSAC mean new Branch Instructors, Regional Instructors or Regional Coaches. In addition, some branches of SSAC have requested that all existing instructors undergo Disclosure checks, often at the request of the local authority. As Disclosure checks are only valid for the day on which they are produced, any new appointment requires a new Disclosure check. Therefore, your existing Disclosure check is not valid for your position in SSAC.

Further information and some Frequently Asked Questions are also available from www.scotsac.com/downloads/CP_FAQ.pdf

Membership of SSAC

Question: I'm an SSAC qualified diver but live in England I have not been a member of any diving organization for some time now. Is it possible to renew my membership where I do not need to be a member of any specific branch? I very much enjoyed being a member of SSAC and receiving your magazine and would like to be a member again?

Answer: In addition to the network of branches throughout Scotland and Northern England, SSAC already have a 'General Branch'. General branch is designed for members who are unable to join a local branch, either because they do not live within close proximity, or for example spend considerable time away from home on business and therefore do not get the benefit of joining a branch. Being a member of General Branch provides all other SSAC benefits, including Scottish Diver magazine, third party liability insurance, access to courses and so on.

Nomination Forms

Q: Where are the nomination forms for this years elections? According to the constitution the ballot papers should have been issued and nominations received by the end of November.

A:  The nomination and election procedure outlined in the constitution states  (Section E 1 (c)) 'Details of the methods of collection of such nominations and voting papers shall be published in advance to all Members'. The General Committee agreed that the nomination forms would not be issued until the November EGM took place as the nomination procedure was dependent on the outcome of the EGM. At the EGM in November there was a positive vote for turning the Club into a Company Limited by guarantee. This means next year we will have a  Board of directors instead of a Committee , although they will still be known as the General Committee . That  Board will have greater responsibilities in law therefore we need a more detailed nomination form, which should eliminate the problems we have had in the past, and a proper job description for anyone standing. You may note from the new M&As and Byelaws, that elections to the GC will be for a period of 3 years, and therefore this would need to be reflected in the material. It was felt that as this is such an important year in our development it was better to wait and give members as much information as possible rather than send out forms that would be inadequate for a company limited by guarantee. There is still plenty of time for the members to send in any nominations they may have. The GC have been working closely with our HR advisor during the last few months to develop a set of 'Job Descriptions' for the posts on the GC and NDC. A new nomination form has also been developed in association with our advisor . These are now complete and approved and will be circulated with the next issue of Scottish Diver.

Contact with HQ

Q: Members of my Branch have had difficulty in making telephone contact with SSAC HQ. Can you please advise why this might be the case?

A: You  may be aware that we have had reduced staffing at HQ since mid-summer. This has resulted in restricted access for members and a reduction in the hours where telephone calls were answered .  A statement on the website advised members they may continue to communicate via telephone, email and post. During the autumn our Administrator did have annual holidays and members of the GC visited the office out of hours to handle urgent membership applications and return phonecalls.  The GC take communication seriously and we are sorry that you have had difficulty. We invite your Branch members to  make further contact with HQ if you still have outstanding queries. We are pleased to advise that a new employee has now joined SSAC HQ, and the office will now be manned during normal working hours, Monday-Friday.
